My "Employer"
Today is the mid-point, actually I hope it is past the mid-point, in a fiasco that in my mind defies intelligence and general convention. I have been bothered by something that happened at the company for which I work, as a contractor, but that is for another blog. I was accused by someone (notice I said someone because no one wants to give me a name) of saying something that was offensive to them (one of the Orthodox Jewish girls of which there are many).
Now, one of my most prevalent tenants in life is the advocacy for tolerance toward diversity be it disability, race, sexual orientation, gender, etc. So, of course, I have taken this as a personal affront. It is an attack on my most sacred principals and reputation. I am the one who always tries to find out more about another culture so I can, hopefully, ensure I don't make some kind of asinine blunder. Someone obviously thinks I did. The thing that is most bothersome, though, is that no one seems to be able to tell me what it was I said nor to whom it was spoken. Do you seem my dilemma? I figured you might. I will continue this at another time because it is just pissing me off all the more right now.
I am back. I work for a charter school, that during this posting will remain nameless, whose students are predominantly black, teaching staff is over 50% white and enrollment office, testing, and psychology department are all Orthodox Jewish. This configuration can and does cause a great deal of confusion. For instance, there are many things about the Jewish religion that are completely foreign to most of the black folk and the white, gentile, folk within our organization. I am sure the reverse is also true. It has been my contention since last year that we all sit down and have some type of sensitivity training which will allow each group to understand the differences of the other group. But, of course, that has not yet happened. Maybe, this is what's offensive to someone, though it seems to me that should be the opposite of the case. I also told someone, after she noticed something I had on my wrist, that I am indeed gay. This, also may be offensive to someone. I do not know.
I have written to my immediate supervisor requesting a meeting to clear up some issues. I would like to know the person whom accused me as well as exactly what it was they say I said. Thus far those requests have not even been acknowledged. Am I wrong to feel as though there is something else going on here that no one really wants to mention? Is there some type of discrimination happening that could leave a black eye on this organization?
Last year I had to put up a fight with the administration because they wanted to hire people as contractors but treat them as employees, so they should certainly know they should not fuck with me as I have no fear of fighting them. In fact that same issue is rearing its ugly head again this year. I will let you all know how this transpires. Thanks again for taking the time to listen.
