Hylander Restaurant in Lakewood, Ohio

On the 23rd of August, 2006 a companion and I, not my usual partner in crime, decided to take a tour of the diversity that the Cleveland area offers. (I mean diversity in race, gender, sexuality, and lifestyle.) After finding a store that celebrates diverse lifestyles (Diverse Universe), we decided to take a walk down Detroit Avenue in Lakewood. There were many places to eat, but we wanted to try something that was one of a kind. Instead of a chain, I wanted a place the locals know but is rarely mentioned elsewhere. We found just that place in the Hylander Restaurant at 14412 Detroit Avenue.

I have to start on a positive note with his establishment. I ordered the broccoli and cheese soup to start. It was phenomenal. I would recommend it to everyone who even slightly likes such soups. The rest of the dinner was no more than OK. I ordered one of the daily specials, Bourbon Kebobs over Rice but they were out at six PM. I then ordered the Stuffed Pepper special. My companion ordered a broiled salmon. Her salmon was dry and incredibly “fishy.” My stuffed pepper was just that one stuffed pepper. The sauce on my pepper was boring and the filling was too hard.
The worst part of the deal, though, was the fact that it took almost 35 minutes for us to get our entrees. We all know the stuffed peppers had to have been prepared in advance and the salmon should not have taken more than about ten minutes from fridge to table. The place was no very busy, so there was no reason for the extended wait. To make it even worse was that the server did not even come to our table to apologize for the outrageous wait. The only reason we stayed was the flavor of the soup. I figured if the soup was so wonderful, the other orders could be better yet. Disappointment was to follow, I almost said “soon to follow” but soon was not a word to describe this place in any way.
