Applebee's in Lyndhurst, Ohio

I have to tell you, I finally found a server that I would hire in an instant. Jessica Y, our server today, July 16, 2006, at Applebee’s at the Greens of Lyndhurst in Lyndhurst, Ohio, was the best I have seen in quite some time. She was attentive, but not overbearing, friendly, helpful and very willing to accommodate my special request. She served us correctly and quickly and even appeared as though she really enjoyed waiting on our table. (Whether she did or not is unimportant, it was the fact that she appeared to enjoy it that mattered.) Kudos to you Jessica Y. I only wish there were many more like you out there but, alas, that is not the way it is.

I, truthfully, do not often like chain restaurants. Many people do like them for the very reason I do not. I believe they are much too predictable. I want some excitement in my dining experience. I love finding the proverbial diamond in the rough and telling the world about it. Applebee’s will never take the world be storm, BUT they do have their place. The food is always pretty much the same, which is very comforting to a great deal of the population. More power to you.

My perennial companion and I decided to order the appetizer sampler platter to start. It was a good choice in that we had the ability to taste most of their offerings. I found the artichoke/spinach dip to be generally flavorless except for the overdose of salt. The cheese sticks were the same as most anywhere else, the boneless wings, though not difficult to prepare to my liking, were excellent. To my taste, they seemed to be prepared with nothing more than Red Devil and butter (margarine). That way they have some heat but they also have a flavor. Then there was a quesadilla that was different in that we determined it had bacon. Not something one usually finds in a quesadilla but it was quite good.

I ordered the pick two meal which came with garlic mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli, and something I believe was supposed to have been garlic toast (no flavor there but it was a nice slice of bread). My companion also ordered the pick two. While she decided to try the steak and ribs, I ordered shrimp and ribs.

The steak was quite a surprise. It was done perfectly and was very tender with a great flavor. The shrimp was fried, which says it all, and as it is almost anywhere you go. The ribs though, were awful to my way of thinking. Don’t get me wrong, they were not bad tasting, they were just bad ribs. In the first place, I have never ordered riblets that had bones. I always assume that riblet means a boneless piece of rib meat with sauce, that was not the case here. In fact, not only did they have bone, but also the meat was very difficult to find. Even if it was my misconception regarding riblets, I would still have been disappointed due to the incredible lack of meat on those bones. Never again will I order such.
