Pizza Hut 802 Pittsburgh Ave., Erie, PA

The latest in my non star-rated restaurant excursions took me to the city of Erie, Pennsylvania. Though outwardly not a very nice looking city depending upon from whence you enter it, precisely like most cities, there are some sparkling gems within the proverbial mountain of rock. BUT, sadly, that is for another time after I have taken my weekend jaunt, which will, hopefully, be soon. This time, as is usually the case, I have but one thing about which to write.

On July 7, 2006 a compatriot and I went to Erie for the morning. We decided, at approximately 12:45 that time was nigh for some sustenance. Looking around we saw many psuedo-choices and decided on the lesser of evils. We picked the Pizza Hut lunch buffet. It would be relatively quick and there would presumably be no surprises. For God’s sake, after all, who hasn’t eaten at least one Pizza Hut Pizza in their lifetime? In fact, I even had a Pizza Hut pizza in Mexico City back in 1990, it was awful, but I digress.

When we arrived it was nearing the end of the lunch rush. There were empty tables; therefore we did not have to wait long. A woman came and seated us, asking if we would prefer a table or a booth. I though that was impressive, as often that is not the case any more. She then asked for our drink order. This was a problem spot. Alana, the name of our semi-server, it was a buffet after all, took the drink order yet proceeded to bus the table next to mine. It DID need to be cleared but should not have been done before arriving with my drinks. The other way around that would have been to wait until she had completed her cleaning before even asking for my order. It could have worked but, while trying to save a few steps, Alana faltered and made a mistake. Remember, when you are not busy enough to say you must have that table, “RIGHT NOW,” then your current customers are most important. You never want to let the people sitting in your section think trash is more important than they are.

On another note, the food was as expected. Actually, I was quite impressed due to the fact that they even put out a couple of pizzas I haven’t had before and one I haven’t had since I lived in West Palm Beach. The flavor of the Buffalo Wing Pizza was just as it should have been, (on Buffalo Wings not pizza.) I wouldn’t order the pizza, but if that is the normal sauce, I just might order the wings. The other was a supreme with spinach, which was good. Then the old ham and pineapple standby was on the table. Although I would not order one, it was quite good.

Pizza Hut’s lunch buffet was, as always, worth the price. I am glad I was able to test something different and give kudos to them for giving their patrons the chance to try. Work a little on your staff development and things will go well.
