TGIFriday's on Ohio 306 in Mentor, Ohio

Today, June 4, 2006, my companion, the one I usually write to you after having dined with, went to TGIFriday's restaurant in Mentor, Ohio. Let me start by saying I was pleasantly impressed with some of the things that happened while there. Other things, of course, were not so good. In fact, one thing was downright awful, and I will get to it all shortly.

Let us start with the positive, shall we? Don’t you hate the, “we,” crap when you know the writer or speaker couldn’t care less but includes himself in the conversation anyway? For example, a waiter asking, “How are we doing tonight?” My companion and I were doing well, considering we had a rough night before, but we could never know how the waiter was doing as we had been no where near him. I digress.

The food portions were quite large and the appetizer with which we started was great. We ordered the nachos, which were a different take on what most people are used to. They are more like a quesadilla with beans on the inside and cheese on top but quite good nonetheless. I would order them again.

I also ordered a Mushroom-Swiss Burger. Again, a nice large portion with fries. I had to take most of it home after eating the nachos. There was a problem, though, with the plate. It appears to be deep but is not, which gives the illusion of more food. We are not stupid so do not treat us as such.

My companion ordered the full rack of ribs and a broccoli soup. The soup was very good and the ribs were tender enough to fall off the bone, but that is where it ends. Although tender, the ribs were also very dry.

We were seated on the north side of the wall separating the bar from dining room in the eastern most two top at our choice. I would never take that seat again. Instead of waiting in the vestibule, many patrons decided to come in and stand right behind our table. Why anyone would want to strand that close top someone’s table is beyond me, but someone on staff should have nicely directed them to a waiting area away from others who are eating, or at least waiting to eat.

Our waiter was the slowest server I think I have ever had the displeasure of having had bring me food. We must have sat for more than five minutes before he even came up to ask us for a drink. By that time one of the hosts had already gotten that order. He then did not show up for nearly another ten minutes to take our appetizer order, which we had to remind him to take, as he just wanted our entrée order. After the meal he did not ask if we wanted dessert, which I did want but did not get due to my disgust. It again took an inordinately long time for him to give us our checks and then even more time to take it to the register. I asked for a take out box, as did my partner, but he got that wrong as well and only brought one box. Alan J may be a very nice young man, but he is most definitely in the wrong profession. I don’t want to be mean, but he seemed as though he was on something powerful. In fact, I want some of that for those days when I need to take the edge off.
We spent over $55.00 on our meals and this server helped to make it unenjoyable and, in fact, annoying.
