Davitino's Italian Restaurant in Mentor, Ohio
On a recent visit to Davitino’s Restaurant on Mentor Avenue in Mentor, Ohio, my companion and I had dinner on a Saturday night, May 20, 2006. We were given the choice of a smoking table right away or non-smoking with a 20-minute wait. We decided to risk the second hand smoke, which wasn’t really any problem at all as the venting must be quite good. While seated and perusing the menu, we noticed that our server had not yet been to the table and it had been more than five minutes. Considering the fact that the place was not overly busy, that seemed strange. When she did finally arrive to take our drink orders, those seemed to take an overly long time as well.
The menu had very little to offer with regard to appetizers, only 4 choices so we decided against anything. My companion ordered Wedding Soup, she said it was excellent and my single taste agreed. There was a grand array of flavors and each one could be tasted; nothing overpowered anything else. Then she had the Pollo Alfredo. The chicken was tender and moist, but the Alfredo sauce was blah. There seemed to be no garlic whatsoever therefore not nearly enough flavor for our tastes.
I ordered, first, the Davitino Parmigiana thinking it was veal, I was told it was pork and always had been. Although I am not positive, I believe that when I had been there in the past is WAS veal as that is what I ordered, but arguing about the past with an ingénue was not about to happen. I then asked for a few minutes more. Again our server took too long coming back.
I finally settled on the Braciola. When it came to the table it looked like a large stuffed cabbage or pepper in shape with a side of spaghettini. The taste, though, was wonderful. The sauce had just the right amount of spice to bring out the flavor of the beef and stuffing (a kind of meatball mixed rolled up in a thin sirloin steak). My drink, lemonade, was strange. It seemed to be little more than lemon flavored water with a slight hint of sweetness. It was actually very good but was not what I would consider lemonade. I was, as usual, happy with the food I ate. The service was a bit slow and I have a problem thinking that I may have been lied to on previous occasions regarding the veal, but, all in all, I would go back.
