Sidewalk Cafe Mentor, Ohio
We walked in to the Sidewalk Cafe restaurant in Mentor, Ohio at approximately 11:45 AM on Mother's Day May 14, 2006. There were only about six other tables being used at that time. We asked for a seven top, which is difficult due to the size of the dining room, and were told we would have to sit a separate tables. We saw another option and moved two tables together without encroaching on the ability to move about the aisles. This was not a problem with anyone.
We, six of the seven, ordered the buffet. The other in our party ordered a mushroom omelet with, and it was stated specifically, extra crispy hash browns.
The buffet at the time we arrived to get our plates filled, had no eggs, two pancakes, no silverware, and Texas toast on a steam plate. A buffet must be stocked well at all times and toast should never be put on steam. The grits should forced the addition of spoons to the silverware that was neither at the buffet nor on the tables. We took sausage, bacon, eggs, when they arrived, pancakes, French toast, and grits. The eggs were fine for liquid pourable eggs and the grits were fine. The pancakes were dry, difficult when over steam, the sausage was completely flavorless as well as being over cooked, and the warm syrup had no flavor at all. The French toast was good but the poor flavor of the syrup hindered the overall taste.
I ordered lemonade and one of my companions ordered an iced tea. The iced tea tasted old and my lemonade tasted as if it were country time or some other kind made from a mix. It was awful.
The omelet was OK, but the hash browns were NOT made even slightly crispy. They had to be re-ordered. One of our party thought the entire buffet was not good. Then she found a hair in her hash browns. Her meal was deleted from the check.
Just before we left, we discovered that the sugar dispenser, one that had been used by three of our party, had cracks in it. The dispenser is glass. Such a thing is a dangerous health hazard and should NEVER be allowed to be on a table or for use ANYWHERE within a restaurant environment, let alone even at your own home.
Granted, the buffet cost only $5.99, but it was not even worth that. I would not recommend the buffet or hash browns to anyone who likes food with flavor.
The manager on duty was Elaine but she left before we did and our server, who did a great job given what she had to work with, was Mellissa J. The man to whom I gave the damaged sugar dispenser did not even acknowledge me. He took the item and turned abruptly away.
