Panini's in Willoughby, Ohio
I was lucky enough to find my original partner in these endeavors and have a meal. Althoug, it has been quite some time, things have, obviously, not chnaged since we spent our time bitching but not doing anything.
Our meal began with a quite decent hostess seating us where we requested, rather than someplace inadequate as is often the case. The booths in this place are enormous, which is nice when the room is needed. Our server, Janelle, was very pleasant and there when she needed to be. When asked about a specific item on the menu, she proved to be knowledgeable, if a bit unable to understand the original question. It was not entirely her fault that she did not quite get what was asked, as the volume in the place was above what one would consider normal. Fie on us for going to a "sports bar" during March Madness.
Anyway, we looked over the menu and decided to order Paninis. These sandwiches are packed with a seemingly odd mixture of food. They have fries, coleslaw, lettuce, tomato (awful at this time of the year), and cheese with a choice of meat (including egg, which was even more odd). My companion ordered a steak panini which we were told was, "Not like a real steak but kinda like the steak burgers they have at Steak and Shake," while I ordered the Steak and egg. Then I ordered a cup of the New England clam chowder. We were told that they had run out of the calm chowder. Mind you, we were the at about 1PM on Good Friday, which is one of the major, "no meat" days for those of a certain religion. What in the hell would have allowed for these people to have run out of something like that so early in the day? I certainly don't know.
The sandwiches came out and looked truthfully massive. In fact, when I took my first bite, I felt as though it would have been better to be a snake so I could unlock my jaws and get my mouth around it. The shocking thing I found was that is was utterly tasteless. The coleslaw was a vinegar based thing, not creamy as I think would have been better, and the fries added nothing. The "steak" was OK, but nothing more. It is someplace I wouldn't mind going, but not for a meal when you might want to catch up with someone. The food was marginal, at best, but the atmosphere, if in the partying mood, was good. Not a family kind of place, in my estimation.
At $17.00 for two meals and two fountain drinks, the price is not bad, but, again, it wasn't something I would write home about, so to speak. The calm chowder thing, though, is moronic, don't you think?
