Longhorn Steakhouse in Mentor, Ohio
I have to admit I was a bit skeptical of this establishment. On of my usual cohorts on these expeditions recommended Longhorn as a place with excellent service and superb food. Although she and I usually agree when we are together, such is often NOT the case when we dine with others, for some unknown cosmic reason.
Anyway, another of my usual companions and I decided to go to the Mentor location on Wednesday, 24 October 2007 at approximately 5:30PM. Surprisingly, this was not a bad time at all. We walked in and were immediately seated by a cheerful, yet not overly so, hostess. In about two minutes, our server was walking by saying, "I'll be with you guys in a minute." The way she said it sound a bit abrupt at the beginning but seemed to be her manner rather than any type of attitude.
Sarah, came back and took our drink order and returned shortly to inquire about appetizers. We said we wanted none but requested information regarding the risotto special. She gladly went into the kitchen to determine the ingredients. We had, meanwhile, decided against it, choosing something else. She returned with the explanation and a loaf of warm bread, which could have been a bit more flavorful or had a butter with flavor, though I did detect a very slight hint of lemon. Hopefully, this flavor was infused in the butter on purpose rather than the butter being stored too closely to lemon in the walk-in. My companion ordered a sirloin and shrimp while I ordered a 12 oz. prime rib, medium rare both of us wanted to have the mashed potatoes just due to craving. She often refuses her second side because she has such odd tastes. I told her, once again, to get it anyway and take it home. After all, it is part of the meal and they will charge regardless. Very few are the restaurants that will take something off the ticket if you don't want it but most will surely charge you if you want something extra.
The food was brought to our table in about 15 minutes and was done the way we asked, except my medium rare was rare without the medium. The mashed potatoes were phenomenal as we both agreed. My companion said her shrimp was great and the steak was good. Our server ended up being the best I have had in some time. She was there when we needed her and not overly attentive. She answered questions when asked and provided information when deemed necessary. AND, most importantly, especially of late, she did NOT forget about us at the end. Kudos to you Sarah. The cooks need to pay a bit more attention to the medium rare order and the storage of delicate foods, but all in all this was a pretty damned good experience. Jen, thanks for the recommendation.
