Jalapeno Loco in Mentor, Ohio

October 28th, 2007 was the second time my companion and I had a meal at Jalapeno Loco. In fact, we bot remembered it as the place that had THE BEST chicken tortilla soup, it still is. What we did NOT remember is the incredible quantity of food, but I will get to that.

This place is so large that it almost feels that you are on your own private patio, the patio comment is due to the large skylight in the main section of the dining room. Upon our arrival at about 2pm on a Sunday, after a rip-roaring Saturday night/Sunday morning Halloween party, we were immediately greeted and taken to our seats by a cute little guy with a goatee. He asked our preference of seating, a major plus, and seated in a table maybe one off from the one we had occupied on our previous visit. Our server was there within one minute of our getting situated. She did not give us her name but was identified, according to our checks, as server #4. She did everything in the proper time frame without being overbearing or too distant. A slight mistake was made when I asked if Guacamole came with the entree I ordered and she said it did not. I then asked for a side of the same which cost me about $3.50, not a bad price considering it was about 1/2 cup full of the stuff. Also, though no fault of the servers, they kitchen never gives me enough warm tortillas when I order the queso fundido, which here is called "melted cheese with chorizo."

Anyway, Jen ordered the Tortillla soup and a combo, while I order the queso fundido and the large combo, which at $8.99 was the most expensive thing I saw on the menu. Each came with various things such as a beef taco, beef enchiladas, chile relleno, these thing were huge and very tasty unlike those over-breaded monstrosities at Don Tequila's. She had a shredded beef enchilada which had, "excellent flavor." In fact, my companion kept raving about it throughout the majority of the meal.

When our food arrived, we were stunned. Each of us received two FULL plates of food to go along with that we already had. I am not kidding when I say that it was lucky no one else was with us. No one else could have fit their plate on our table. My companion placed a to go order as well, which, surprisingly, came with tortilla chips and salsa. I though that was quite a nice bonus and do not remember seeing it before.

Needless to say, we took a great deal of food home. Truthfully, I have had two more meals from it and there is still a little more to be eaten. Wow!!!

Our server, the enigmatic #4, did kind of fall off at the end, not so much different that most everywhere. We had to ask for to go containers and had to wait for the to go order, which is why it is always placed with the regular order so it is done when we are. I realize there is a slight language difference but #4 was quite adept at English. She seemed to be the only server on the floor and was all over the place rather than in a certain section, which could have made it difficult to remember where she was. But, that is the fault of management. This was a WONDERFUL experience except of the minor mistakes. I would recommend this place to anyone, and not just those wanting Mexican fare.

Sad to say, this place is overpriced and serves up fake sour cream (sour topping)and a Piss-poor version of guacamole--too much salsa added to thin out the amount of avocado in it. Also, a 12oz margarita was a $8. I think I'll take my Mexican cravings to the new El Patrone in Mentor on the Lake. Great place, great prices, real sour cream!
