JDs Post House in Mentor on the Lake, Ohio (New Owners)

I need to start this with a bit of a diatribe. I am getting a bit worried about my connection with some people of late. It seems that personal censorship is becoming more important than telling the truth is some circles. I understand certain things, but buck up and don't bow to pressure. This is a service and people, you know it as well as I, look forward to the next issue to see what we have to say. Let us not disappoint them.

Now on to my latest restaurant adventure. Sit back, my friends, and come along for a ride you probably won't believe. I love starting things that way. It gets the mind working before I write much of anything.

JD's Post House was never a place I would send anyone for any reason. In its past incarnation it was superbly BORING! Well, let me tell you, I don't know what they did, but I was actually impressed with this, supposedly, "New Management and Ownership." I can't, for any reason understand why they would have left the name, though. Anyway, that is not important we went on 29 August 2008 at approximately 1:30PM and it was quite full. I still do not like the "ambiance of the place, but that is just one of my quirks.

The menu is not overly large, but it is quite eclectic. They have everything from a chicken broccoli Alfredo to broiled scrod and baked salmon. The have rib eye steaks and breaded ocean perch. I would have preferred a list of the specials at my table as there were about 10 of them and I could not remember even one. The sever didn't list them for us either, but that is the ONLY thing she did wrong.

My companion and I decided to order an appetizer and got the Brown and Tan Beer Battered Onion Rings and I ordered the Jack and Bleu Cheese sticks. The onion rings were most certainly NOT beer battered since their coating was a type of BREADING, but the cheese sticks were a welcome change from the everyday poppers and/or mozzarella sticks. They had a nice buffalo flavor on top of a light breading. Very interesting but a bit pricey at six for $5.00.

I vacillated between a fish sandwich, because I saw someone eating one on the way in, and the chicken parmigiana, because I have been wanting spaghetti for quite a while. I got the chicken parm and J ordered the club from the specials board, good memory on her, huh? Each entree came with soup while mine also had salad (soup and salad on my order was supposed to have been endless but I was not asked about more, though I did not inquire either) while my cohort's had fries (interestingly coated with something to add flavor) and a dessert. J didn't say much about her chicken noodle soup but my clam chowder was excellent. I would suspect it came from somewhere pre-made and probably needed to be reconstituted, but, who cares, it was great. My salad was a cut above the norm as well. It had a sprinkling of grated cheese, I would say a cheddar/jack mix, as well as pieces of bell pepper, cucumber, red, onion, cherry tomatoes, and grated carrot. Good job on that!

Our server, Kim, or so it says on our receipt, was "Johnny-on-the-spot" throughout our stay. She was not overbearing nor was she distant. She asked us how we wanted the food delivered, things like whether or not we wanted to have our soup wait until the entrees, which was a nice touch. She kept our rather large table cleared of excess plates and she was just pleasant all around. I would suggest you ask for her when eating there.

The food was quite tasty as well as being enough for about four people. I took more than 1/2 of my entree home as it was just too much, AND I was supposed to have had fresh bread, too (not that I could have eaten it anyway). I rarely order chicken anything in a restaurant because it is always breast and always dry, but this was absolutely not. The breading was nice and light AND very good and the marinara sauce was very tomato tasting, which I love. My companion's club was huge and made with only two pieces of bread, another welcome difference from the norm. She said it was excellent. We definitely would go back again AND I have already told family to go themselves. Good job you guys!

There were a couple of things that you should work on though. One is the fact that J was never offered her "free" dessert. Another was the fact that I was never offered more salad nor soup and my bread never came to the table. These are slight mistakes but can make a place look bad, as there were three different things within our two orders. Pay a bit more attention to the details and you will be alright. I have to say this as well: When we were leaving, I made it a point to say, loudly enough for the hostess to hear, "Oh, you WERE supposed to have gotten dessert." She ignored us. Not a good idea. I would also suggest that she pay more attention to those coming in. They were only there for about two minutes, but the hostess did not acknowledge them until after she rang out our check. That would have bothered me had I been them. It only takes a second to turn, smile and say you will be right with a new customer.
